Spain in Winter
When you think of Spain, you probably don’t think of cold and rainy, right? Well depending on the time of year and location, Spain can experience a diverse range of weather, including chilly winters, depending on the time of year and location. Even in the south, temperatures can drop, so pack accordingly!
I lived in Spain for two winters, and I am about to go back for a trip in February. One of the most shocking things about my time there was the weather. I was not expecting to be so cold! While the south (Andalucia) is milder than other parts of Europe, you’ll still need a warm jacket and long sleeves. Remember that central heating generally isn’t common in Spain, so prepare for both indoor and outdoor activities.

Winter in Spain FAQs
Should I visit Spain in the winter?
Absolutely! Spain is equally captivating in winter, with fewer crowds and opportunities to explore popular areas without the hustle and bustle. Christmas in Spain is magical, and January 6th is a special holiday. Even with cooler temperatures, you can still enjoy outdoor activities. Many cafes and restaurants in the south offer outdoor seating with heaters.
What will the weather be like?
The weather varies depending on your destination. Northern Spain can be colder and rainy, so pack a waterproof jacket. Madrid, in the center, experiences mild but chilly winters. The east coast and south have mild but chilly temperatures as well.
What do people wear in the winter?
Spaniards tend to dress for the season, not just the weather. Expect to see boots, coats, and scarves even on warmer days. Dress cute and comfortable, but avoid sweatpants or athleisure. I’ll provide some outfit inspiration and ideas for a winter packing list below.
What to Pack
What to Pack- Shoes
Shoes can be so tricky. They take up a lot of suitcase space and can make or break an outfit. Not to mention they need to be comfortable for all the sightseeing. See some of my recommendations below:
Booties
Booties are a staple. Go for a neutral color with a low heel like this pair from Sam Edelman, and you have a great option for both day and night.

Platform Sneakers
I have a pair of tan platform Converse, and absolutely love them. They are comfortable, stylish, and a great addition to your Spain trip. I recommend ordering a half-size down!

What to Pack- Jackets
A jacket is a winter travel essential. A lighter jacket works for daytime, but bring a heavier one for cooler evenings. Consider these options:
Brown Jacket
Brown is trending this winter, and a chic brown jacket will keep you warm and stylish. Check out this Zara option.

Wool Coat
I have a beautiful brown Massimo Dutti wool coat I found at a thrift store (!!!), but you can find many great options, new or second-hand. Check out this option from Quince.
What to Pack- Pants
Pack blue and black jeans, plus comfortable “soft” pants for walking days. Stick to neutral colors for versatile outfits.
Blue Jeans
I have a pair of straight-leg jeans from Mango that I love. Check out this option from Mango for something similar.

Black Jeans
Black jeans are great for day-to-night activities. I love the Colette style, which can be found here from Old Navy.

Flowy Pants
Flowy pants are great for days when you want to be cute but comfortable. I have various types of pants from different brands in black, tan, and cream. Check out this Madewell option.
What to Pack- Tops
Sweaters and long sleeve tops are winter staples. Pack a cozy sweater, layering pieces, and a patterned blouse for a pop of personality.
Sweaters
A good chunky sweater is an excellent addition to your winter in Spain trip. I love a fun color to add with jeans for a casual yet sophisticated look. I have a fun pink sweater that is easy to pull on to spice up any winter outfit. Sézane has a lot of great options if you are looking to splurge.

Long Sleeve Tops
Long-sleeved tops are essential for winter. I love a white turtleneck to use as a layering piece, or on its own with some great accessories for a more mild winter day. Check out this classic top from Abercrombie and Fitch below.

Patterned Blouse
If you get tired of sweaters, try a fun blouse! I have a few long-sleeved patterned blouses I love to wear when I don’t feel like wearing a sweater. See this Zara option below.

What to Pack- Other Essentials
Scarf
A scarf is a great way to spice up a casual outfit, while adding extra warmth. It comes in handy at night!
Cross Body Bag
I always take a cross body bag with me when traveling. They are a great accessory, and are quite secure and comfortable in comparison to a large tote or small shoulder bag.
Sunglasses
You may not think about wearing sunglasses in the winter, but it can still be sunny! And you will likely be spending a lot of time outside, whether you are taking in the beautiful sites or enjoying a glass of wine on an outdoor patio. Make sure to grab some SPF too!
